The Mount Groppo Rosso, with its 1,597 meters above sea level, is one of the most characteristic and beloved peaks of the Val d'Aveto. It dominates the area with an unmistakable presence, offering wide and spectacular views that range over the Ligurian Apennines, the valley below, and, on the clearest days, all the way to the Po Valley.
The name “Groppo Rosso” comes from rocks rich in iron minerals which, especially at sunset, take on warm, reddish hues, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding meadows and woods. This natural phenomenon makes the mountain particularly fascinating in every season, offering ever-changing views.
An excursion for everyone
Il Groppo Rosso is an accessible and rewarding destination, suitable for both experienced hikers as well as less experienced hikers. The summit can be reached via several marked trails, including those that pass through the Onion Meadow, from the Astass Mountain Hut or from the village of Roncolongo, offering routes of varying length and difficulty.
One of the most popular sections is the final stretch toward the summit, which gradually opens up onto a spacious natural balcony above Santo Stefano d'Aveto: from here the gaze embraces the entire valley, framed by the mountains Bue, Maggiorasca e Pen.
